THE TALES OF NABOTH AND ARAUNAH

THE TALES OF NABOTH AND ARAUNAH

A good story is engaging and I tell you about Naboth and Araunah, two men with different temperaments. Maybe, we will glean a thing or two from their tales. So let’s dive in, shall we?

Naboth’s story

Naboth had a vineyard beside the castle of a certain king named Ahab. The king needed the land to grow a vegetable garden (which had to be near his palace) and sought to meet Naboth. “I will give you a better vineyard or its value in money”, he promised. A generous offer, no?

Naboth refused. God forbid, he gives the king the inheritance of his fathers, he said. In my head, I am thinking… “Really! Naboth, are you sure your fathers would not have wanted you to make the deal?”

Long story short, King Ahab goes home to sulk. His wife learns why. We learn that Naboth is set up and killed. To read the full account, click here.

Could Naboth have asked questions to make better choices? Could he have chosen a better location and still preserved his ancestral heritage? Was a win-win possible?

Araunah’s account

David, King of Israel, needed to act fast to stop a plague. The people were dying in great numbers over something he felt responsible for.  He needed a threshing floor which belonged to Araunah.

Araunah saw the king coming and paid homage. Remarkably, he offered the space as well as his oxen when he learned what the king wanted. Except, King David insisted on paying for what he needed. Find the full story here.

A good story is engaging just like the tales of Naboth and Araunah

Naboth and Araunah demonstrate different approaches, attitudes and outcomes to help us choose the way to go. One lived. The other did not. Who was wiser? “A living dog is better than a dead lion” scenario wouldn’t you say? Not that Araunah is a dog, if you catch my drift.

Stories help us remember the past, don’t they? In the NIGHT OF BROKEN GLASS is one of such to remember.
